Thelma Ann Hawkins Evans, 80, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Power County Hospital in American Falls.
She was born July 17, 1932 in Malad, oldest child of Joseph Richard Hawkins II and Thelma Burrows. She was raised and educated in Daniels and was a graduate of Malad High School of the class of 1949. Thelma was Miss Malad City. She worked on the family farm, Tommy’s Cafe and J and Ireland Bank.
Thelma married the love of her life, Edison “Ed” J. Evans on May 6, 1950, in Malad. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Jan. 18, 1994.
In 1951 she and her family moved to Ogden, UT, when her husband hired on with Standard Oil. She moved to Twin Falls, ID, in 1954 when Ed became the company’s first cosignee. She and her family’s last move was to American Falls in 1965 when she and Ed bought the Hillcrest Truckstop.
She was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by two sons, Floyd Evans and Tim Evans, both of American Falls; and one daughter, Julia Ann of Stansbury Park, UT; one sister, Audrey Patterson of Malad; four grandchildren, Christopher (Stephanie) Evans of North Plains, OR; Nicholas (Michelle) Evans of Newton, UT; Stacey (Flint) Raben of Mulino, OR; Stephanie Evans of Stansbury Park; nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers, and one grandson Tony.
Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. in the American Falls LDS Fourth Ward Chapel, 650 Pocatello Ave. with Bishop Steve Tolman officiating. Viewing starts at 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. There will be a viewing in Malad at the Horsley Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 132 W. 300 North; with burial in the Malad City Cemetery following the viewing at 3 p.m. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Horsley Funeral Home.
