Carl D. Nielsen passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at his home in Aberdeen, ID. Carl was born in Hyrum, UT, to Carl and Vera Obray Nielsen on Feb. 26, 1925. He joined one brother, Arthur, later two more brothers, Roy and Neil, and a sister, Betty, also joined the family. His younger years were spent in Weston, ID, where his family owned a small farm. In his junior year of high school, the family moved to Nampa, where they found a farm they felt would be more productive for them.
Carl graduated from Nampa High School, where he had made lifelong friends. Shortly after graduating he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He saw active duty in the Pacific being part of the invasion of Iwo Jima.
Carl spent his entire life working in agriculture; particularly in potatoes and onions. He started with his own small acreage, sold that and started working for the Idaho Dept. of Agriculture Inspection Service. After several years he started managing warehouses and eventually went into sales.
In 1947 he married Ruby King and there were five children born to this union, Carl Ralph, Glenda, Bonnie, Michael, and Kelly. They later divorced and in 1965 he married Leadell Davis and there was one daughter born to this union. They were later sealed in the Cardston, Alberta LDS Temple. Carl Ralph and Kelly preceded him in death. He later adopted Leadell’s four children from a previous marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Leadell, and children, Glenda (Jack) Fuller, Bonnie Peterson, Pete (Linda) Nielsen, Kelly (Jim) Cassell, Perry Nielsen, Pat (Rexann) Nielsen and Carla (Chris) Snyder. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Aberdeen Second Ward. Viewing was an hour before the funeral at the church.
