I don’t know whether I feel guiltier because my friends were concerned I was going to die or because my family thought the same thing.
It’s also even more embarrassing because for the first two months after I suffered the aneurysms I was out of it and didn’t even know what was happening. I remember none of the doctors or nurses from that time.
It was really disconcerting when Debbie came into my hospital room and told me it was about time for medicine and dinner and I thought it had only been a couple days, but in actuality it had been more like 60 days.
And when Debbie and the boys told me how funny and embarrassing I had been, I was even more red-faced and eager to find my way home. I didn’t remember taking the Life Flight to Salt Lake City. The eager nursing assistants were unfamiliar to me but were certainly friendly like small town people.
Apparently I did the right thing heading immediately to the hospital when I felt something wasn’t quite right. The doctors said if I hadn’t responded immediately, I probably wouldn’t be here.
I actually agreed with them, because thinking back to when it happened, I’m not sure I could have survived the headaches.
It’s been amazing how many people greeted me, hugged me, and told me how they had me in their prayer circles. I told them thank you, but honestly wanted to tell them it would have been okay if they hadn’t because the tubes sticking out of my body and the constant headaches were almost unbearable.
But thanks to some excellent physical therapy and caring doctors and nurses, I’m almost back to normal. The golf game’s going to take a little work, but I’m still thankful to be here.
Timing was also good because Preston had just graduated from Idaho State University and he was ready to cover my bases without me nurse maiding him through it first. Now I know he’s ready to come to grips with overseeing the business. Just a few little tweeks and he’ll be good to go.
Don’t know if I’ll ever be able to thank everyone personally for their well wishes, so I hope this column will suffice. Thank you all, and I hope I never have to organize a prayer circle because of your health problems.
