Our mother, Dorothea Bernadine (Slaven) Grischkowsky, 80, was called home to our Lord on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015 at Spring Creek Assisted Living in American Falls. She was born in Selden, KS, on April 23, 1935 to James and Dorothy (Shuler) Slaven and was the eldest of seven children.
Her family moved to Idaho where she attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Blackfoot. The family later moved to American Falls where she attended and graduated from high school. She married Charles Mock and their union produced a son, Charles Jr. They later divorced and mom met our father, Emil David Grischkowsky.
Our parents were married on Nov. 13, 1955 and were blessed with four children, Terry, Brian, Lisa and Mark. They made their home in American Falls and in 1987 moved to Henderson, NV, with our brother Mark. They loved Nevada and enjoyed several wonderful years there together until our father’s passing.
Mom and Mark returned to American Falls in 1989. Mom was a homemaker and was active in bowling, golf and ceramics. She had a knack for design and it seemed that whatever she did, she did it well. At Christmas time she would take great care in wrapping gifts for family and friends. The gifts were so beautiful we almost couldn’t bear to open them!
Her talent for painting ceramics was rewarded with many blue ribbons. These treasured items are proud reminders of our mother and her talent. She will be especially remembered by her spirit of adventure and determination.
Mom had a wonderful resounding laugh and everyone would say, that’s Bernie! The last few years of her life, she suffered from the debilitating effects of Dementia. Her true and beautiful spirit is restored and she is now at peace. She is survived by her children, Terry (Josie), Brian (Wanda), Lisa (Gordon), Mark, Chuck (Patrizia); grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a brother. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Emil, grandchild Angela, four brothers and a sister. A viewing for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Davis-Rose Mortuary, 170 Idaho St., American Falls. Funeral services will follow at 12 noon. Interment will be at the Falls View Cemetery in American Falls following services. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.davisrosemortuary. com. “The family would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Spring Creek Assisted Living and Encompass Hospice for the extraordinary compassion and care our mother received”.
