Jose Ramon Calzada passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 26, 2024 in Aberdeen, ID, of heart failure.
He is survived by his wife Birde Kay Grover; son Joseph Cain; grandchildren, Koye Ricky and Imree Ranae; siblings Begona, Eufemia, Maria Isabel, Maria Aranzazu, and Maria Inmaculada. He was preceded in death by his parents Fermin Calzada Benguria (1998) and MariaIsabel Zabala Cearreta (2002); siblings Maria Luisa (1942), Maria Luisa (2020) and twin brother Jose Maria (2016).
Ramon was born Feb. 21, 1947 in Bustoria, Spain, to a traditional Basque family, of shepherds and raised attending school until the age of 11 when he and his twin began working in a fish salting factory. At age 12 the twins began working fishing boats to help with family finances. After four years on fishing boats, they joined crews on oil tankers traveling the world for another 2 1/2 years. At age 19 they entered the military for two years. After completing their military obligation, they worked on fishing boats until the opportunity came to travel to the United States in 1969.
Ramon worked for Laird Ranches in Dubois, ID, for 12 years during which time he met and then married his sweetheart Kay, on March 10, 1976. After working various ranches and the addition of Cain on Sept. 5, 1977, they settled in Aberdeen where Ramon worked 35 years for the University of Idaho Research Extension Center before retiring.
Ramon loved big game hunting, working with his bird dogs, and raising stock. He shared a love of horseback riding with Kay, watching boxing and old westerns.
Ramon was always jovial with a good heart nature who brought a smile or laugh to all who knew him.
