Gene Alden Stewart 7-3-24

Gene Alden Stewart, 89, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in the company of his loving family. He was born in Crystal, ID, on Feb. 23, 1935, to George and Ruth Stewart.
As a young boy, Gene was kept busy helping on the family farm fetching cows each evening, feeding chickens, pigs, and baby calves, weeding the garden, bringing in firewood, churning butter, and milking the cows. He started driving a tractor at age eight.
He attended the Mercer Creek School, six miles away from his home, by walking or riding a horse. He also attended Pocatello High School, graduating in 1953. At “Poky” he was active in Future Farmers of America and served as the group’s reporter. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Idaho, taking classes in agriculture and farm animals. While at “Idaho,” he enrolled in ROTC and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant.
Gene married Lois Anne Cox on June 25, 1960. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Aug. 29, 1961. Together they ran the family farm until he retired in 2013.
He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Aug. 26, 1951, and served in many positions including Sunday School President, Seventies Quorum President, Stake Clerk, and Senior Couple Service Missionary.
Gene is survived by: his children, Greg (Hanna) Stewart-Longhurst (Fairfield, WA); Jeff (Sheri) Stewart (Arbon); Vickie (Joe) Christensen (Pocatello); Amy K. Stewart (Salt Lake City, UT); Jeremy (Amy Lynne) Stewart (Stansbury Park, UT); 20 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; his sisters, Georgia Imhoff and Shirley Robbins; his brother, Seth Stewart; his grandson Michael Stewart; and great-granddaughter Jayden Mitchell.
A viewing will be held Friday, July 5, 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilks Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Ave., Pocatello, ID. Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral, July 6, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Portneuf Building, 8200 W. Portneuf Rd., Pocatello, ID, at 11 a.m. There will be a viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 2864 S. 5th Ave., Pocatello, ID.
