1947-2016
Merna Kay Quinn Scarbrough, age 69, lost her valiant battle with cancer on Saturday, July 30, 2016.
Merna was born in American Falls, ID, on Jan. 7, 1947. She was the youngest of three children born to Kenneth and Eunice Quinn.
Merna spent the first 18 years of her life on the family ranch at Roy, ID. She attended school at Rockland, ID, and graduated from high school in 1965. She was very popular in high school and served as an officer of her classes and the student body. She was also very involved in the Job’s Daughters while in school.
After graduating, Merna moved to Boise, ID, in 1965 and enrolled in beauty school. Her mother and father sold the ranch that same year and also moved to Boise. Merna worked for Sears in the audit department for several years. She worked for US Bank in the mortgage department handling the Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae accounts. In the early 70s, she enjoyed working for the Idaho Racing Commission, figuring payouts by hand for the horse races (before computers). Merna’s favorite job, however, was just being a Mom.
In 1975, Merna met Jerry Scarbrough and they dated for two years. They were married on May 28, 1977. They were married for 39 years.
Merna loved to go camping. Some of her favorite places were Deadwood Reservoir, Horsethief Reservoir, and Crooked River above Idaho City.
Merna is survived by her husband Jerry and children Jim Miller, Kim Costello, Mary Scarbrough, and Kevin Scarbrough, and their spouses; one sister, Darlene Richardson (Frank) and one brother Darrell (Angela); four beloved grandchildren, Nikki, Heath, Trevor and Hayley; numerous brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Merna was loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed life and family. She never lost her small town values and old fashioned roots and morals. She had a lifelong enthusiasm for living that did not change with time or age. She believed in her Savior and was not afraid of dying.
Services were conducted at Foothills Christian Church on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m.
